What it's all about

Injectors at Luna Park.It is well documented - being a teenager can be tough. But what’s not so well documented is that being a teenager with diabetes can be even tougher.

Your teenage years can be the best or worst years of your life, depending on how well you can go with the flow while maintaining some form of control. What teenager wants to be thought of as ‘special’, weighed down by a strict lifestyle and routine that holds them back from all the good stuff?

A few useful tips can go a long way in helping people with diabetes to play it a little smarter when doing what they want to do. Without it, chances are they are still going to do what they want anyway, but while putting themselves at risk. That’s why we exist.

Why we do what we do

The Injectors is a volunteer support group that is committed to the welfare of teenagers with diabetes.

We’re all about helping teenagers to help themselves – giving them the confidence to manage their diabetes around their life, rather than manage their life around their diabetes.

We do this by providing a relaxed network of peer and professionally based support services for teenagers with diabetes.

Who we are

The Injectors is a 200+ strong network of people, family, friends, and health professionals, all with the one common interest – the welfare of teenagers with diabetes.

At the helm is a committee of ten volunteers with the combined experience of over 150 years living with diabetes.

We’re also backed by a close relationship with Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, as well as a network of casual volunteers.

Currently, The Injectors is funded through corporate donations, material assistance from the RCH, and funds generated through speaking engagements and limited fundraising.

Who it’s all for

For teenagers with diabetes (ie people aged 13 to 19), there is a real lack of information to help them not only survive their teenager years, but enjoy them as well.

Sure there are plenty of health professionals around to give advice to teenagers with diabetes and their parents, about what they should and should not be doing, but how many teenagers feel comfortable giving the full story on what they get up to? Very few.

The Injectors has also benefited a broad range of health professionals involved in diabetes care by improving the often uncomfortable relationship they share with teenagers with diabetes.

What we offer

Injector presentingWe produce a newsletter – published quarterly, containing a range of news, reviews, advice, gossip, and humour, all written by members, and supporters, and produced by the committee.

We run social activities and events – providing an opportunity for members to mix with people of their own age with diabetes. Activities in the past have included bike riding, roller blading, movies, BBQs, and bowling.

We present/speak – we’re often asked to present on a variety of topics at health education forums, diabetes symposiums, conferences, and group discussions.
